Responding to neighborhood complaints, Hackensack police descended on First and High streets Friday, arresting four people on drug charges.
The four including two 17-year-olds, one of who allegedly insisted that police return 15 small plastic bags of crack seized in the arrest were charged with possession of drugs, possession of drugs with intent to distribute, distributing drugs within 1,000 feet of a school, and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.
The arrests boosted to 19 the number of people Hackensack police arrested on drug charges last week.
Officers Kevin O’Boyle and Chris Toomey saw several men scatter as they arrived at about 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of First and High streets, an area notorious for drug activity, police said. One of the suspects threw the bags of crack underneath a parked van on First Street.
Police said the officers arrested at the scene Jerry Carroll, 29, of 211 Passaic St., Hackensack, and the juvenile who later sought to reclaim the crack. Officer John Carroll, no relation to the suspect, and Sgt. Frank Lomia arrested another 17-year-old and 20-year-old Laron Boyd of 118 Atlantic St., Hackensack, after a chase, police said.
Although police went to the neighborhood because residents had complained that armed men were in the streets, no guns were found at the scene. Police said there was an arrest warrant for Carroll, charging him with violation of parole stemming from a conviction on numerous counts of drug distribution.
The juveniles were released to the custody of relatives. Boyd posted a $1,000 bail bond after spending the night in the Bergen County Jail, and Carroll, because of the parole violation, was being held without bail in the jail.

The Record (New Jersey) | Two Star B | NEWS | Page A03

In what police call a continuing crackdown on drug transactions, 15 people have been arrested during the past week.
The arrests occurred during routine motor-vehicle stops or during surveillance for ongoing investigations, Hackensack Police Detective Sgt. Mike Mordaga said.
Except for a Hartford, Conn., man, all of those arrested were from Hackensack.
The latest arrest was made about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, when Julius Williams, 26, of 27 Newman St., was allegedly seen selling cocaine at First Street and Central Avenue, Mordaga said.
When officers approached him, Williams took off in his car, leading police on a high-speed chase. He abandoned the car on Lehigh Street and fled on foot, Mordaga said.
Jumping backyard fences and ducking into alleyways, Williams made his way to Railroad Avenue, where he was arrested.
Williams was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail on Friday. He was charged with possessing and distributing cocaine and heroin, distributing drugs within 1,000 feet of a school, and resisting arrest.

A 25-year-old Hackensack man out on bail and awaiting trial on drug possession and distribution charges was arrested on new drug charges in a pre-dawn raid Saturday, police said.
Police said Harry Kittrell had more than 100 vials of crack and a plastic bag filled with marijuana when they arrested him in a Railroad Avenue apartment. Detective Sgt. Robert Wright, Officer Kevin O’Boyle, and a team of 10 officers from the Hackensack Police Narcotic, Youth, and Detective divisions arrested him about 1 a.m., Detective Sgt. Mike Mordaga said.
Kittrell was charged with two counts of possession of drugs with intent to distribute and was being held on $75,000 bail in Bergen County Jail, Mordaga said.
Arrested with Kittrell was Albertina Brown, the 26-year-old resident of the apartment where Kittrell allegedly was selling drugs, police said. Brown, 26, of 69 Railroad Ave. was held on $25,000 bail.
“We targeted this area was because it’s a known area for blatant drug sales,” Mordaga said. “We received numerous complaints from residents.”
Kittrell faces numerous other charges filed over the past year in Hackensack, including charges of selling crack to a state trooper within 1,000 feet of a school and selling crack to a Hackensack officer.

AIRPORT DRUG BUST SETS RECORD 40 POUNDS OF HEROIN SEIZED

By Michael O. Allen, Record Staff Writer | Saturday, August 24, 1991

The Record (New Jersey) | All Editions | NEWS | Page A03

Customs agents arrested two sisters arriving at Newark Airport from Sweden on Thursday with about 40 pounds of heroin, worth $18 million on the street, authorities said Friday.
“This is the largest heroin seizure at Newark International Airport,” said Robert Van Etten, special agent in charge for the U.S. Customs Service.
The previous largest shipment seized at the airport was 11.7 pounds on Oct. 11, 1990, Van Etten said. “As the number of international flights at Newark Airport increases, U.S. Customs has seen an increase in narcotics smuggling at Newark,” he added.
Judy Merle Corbin, 42, of Atlanta and her sister, Sandra Sue Corbin, 41, of Kansas City, Mo., were arrested about 6:30 p.m. Thursday in possession of a suitcase and roller bag that had secret compartments and false bottoms filled with heroin, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Ana T. Escobar.
Van Etten said the women were couriers for a Nigerian heroin-smuggling organization. The organization shipped the heroin from Thailand to Sweden, then employed the women to bring it into the United States, he said.
Van Etten declined to disclose what led Customs to the women or the circumstances of the arrest. He did say that the women had lengthy criminal records.
They were charged with importing heroin and were being held without bail in the custody of U.S. marshals, Escobar said.

The Record (New Jersey) | Four Star B | NEWS | Page B02

A 28-year-old man wanted in Passaic County for sentencing on drug charges is being held without bail following his arrest Thursday in a motel, authorities said.
Pernell Brooks, 28, was flushing crack cocaine down a toilet when five detectives two from Secaucus and three from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department walked into his room at the Red Roof Inn about 10 a.m., said Sgt. Kathy Krzysko, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department.
Brooks, whose last known address is 68 President St., Passaic, was wanted on five warrants for failing to appear in Passaic County Superior Court for sentencing, Krzysko said.
Krzysko said the detectives recovered $10,000 worth of crack cocaine, some of it in jumbo vials, and about 500 empty vials.
Brooks faces charges in Secaucus and Passaic County for possession of cocaine, possession of the drug with intent to distribute, possession of paraphernalia, hindering his arrest by allegedly flushing the drug down the toilet, and maintaining a drug production facility.

POLICE SAY MEN SOLD COCAINE IN PARKING LOT

By Michael O. Allen, Record Staff Writer |Saturday, June 1, 1991

The Record (New Jersey | Two Star B | NEWS | Page A04

City police, responding to residents complaints of rampant drug dealing at their apartment building, have arrested two men they saw allegedly selling cocaine in the parking lot.
Fernando Hernandez, 29, of 28 E. Palisade Ave., Palisades Park, and Nelson Adarve, 34, of 31 W. Englewood Ave., Englewood, were being held in the Bergen County Jail Friday on $100,000 bail.
About 7:15 p.m. Thursday, detectives Edward Murray and Charles Gormley saw Hernandez, with Adarve sitting next to him, drive into the parking lot of the building at 143 Tenafly Road, honk his horn, and sell a packet to a tenant, who was not arrested, said Englewood Police Capt. C. Kenneth Tinsley.
The two then drove to Sunnyside Park in Englewood, where they picked up Timothy Maloney, 26. Shortly afterward, police, who were following in an unmarked car, attempted to pull them over. They sped off, but the chase ended a short while later on Marcotte Lane in Tenafly when they crashed into a tree.
Charges against Hernandez and Adarve include possession of 65 grams of cocaine, worth about $8,000; possession of the drug within 1,000 feet of a school; possession with intent to distribute; reckless driving, and eluding police, Tinsley said.
Maloney, whose last known address was 177 Pleasant Ave., Englewood, was charged with possession of cocaine and released on his own recognizance, Tinsley said.

TONS CONFISCATED, 8 ARRESTED; NEW JERSEY’S BIGGEST DRUG BUST

By Michael O. Allen, Record Staff Writer | Saturday, June 1, 1991

The Record (New Jersey) | Two Star B | NEWS | Page A01

In what is being called New Jersey’s largest drug haul ever, undercover U.S. Customs Service agents Friday seized 4,700 pounds of cocaine, 7,000 pounds of marijuana, and $995,000 in cash, and arrested eight men connected to the shipment, officials said.
“New Jersey, unfortunately, is becoming a central transit place for heroin, cocaine, and other forms of narcotics,” said Robert van Etten, special customs agent in charge.
Friday’s arrests culminated a four-month investigation in which customs agents infiltrated a New York metropolitan area drug-smuggling organization that was supplied by the Cali drug cartel in Colombia, Van Etten said. The marijuana was to be delivered to Illinois and Indiana, he added.
The cocaine had a wholesale value of $58.2 million, and the marijuana was valued at $11.2 million wholesale, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Stuart Rabner.
Van Etten said a private transport plane brought the drugs first to Miami, then to Newark International Airport about a week ago. The drugs were transferred to a rented truck, which was seized by agents in Newark Friday.
Among those arrested were North Jersey residents Enidio Abreu, 42, of 310 Warwick Ave., Teaneck, and Julio Menendez, 29, of 1614 83rd St., North Bergen.
The eight were charged with conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine and marijuana. They were being held without bail in the Union County Jail.

100-MPH CHASE, DRUG ARRESTS REPORTED BY PARKWAY POLICE

By Michael O. Allen, Record Staff Writer | Sunday, April 28, 1991

The Record (New Jersey) | All Editions | NEWS | Page A04

Two men were arrested on drug charges and a third led police on a 100-mph chase in three unrelated incidents on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, parkway police said.
In the first incident, police saw motorcyclist Charles Cherry, 25, of Manhattan traveling at a high rate of speed in Englewood Cliffs about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, said parkway Police Chief Vincent Arfuso, who gave this account of the incidents:
After a five-mile chase at speeds reaching 100 mph, Officer Vincent Cammarata stopped Cherry in Alpine. Cherry was issued several traffic summonses, including one for reckless driving, and released on $4,000 bail.
In the second incident, Officer James Paul stopped a car near Tenafly for a broken headlight about 1:50 a.m. Friday. A passenger, Juan Rodriguez Jr., 37, of Newburgh, N.Y., was charged with possession of about an ounce of cocaine and four small packets of marijuana. He was being held in Bergen County Jail on $11,000 bail.
The driver was issued traffic summonses and released.
Ariel Torres, 31, of the Bronx, was arrested about 2:50 a.m. on a charge of illegal possession of a weapon and drugs.
Officer Charles Jones stopped Torres northbound car in Alpine because of broken taillights. When Torres was unable to produce a valid license, Jones ordered him out of the car. Inside the auto, the officer found a loaded, 20-shot 9mm automatic pistol, 10 packets of heroin, and a small amount of cocaine and marijuana.

BERGEN FIRM HIT IN $13M DRUG BUST

By Michael O. Allen, Record Staff Writer | Saturday, April 20, 1991

The Record (New Jersey) | Edition: All Editions | NEWS | Page A01

Federal drug agents have arrested the president of an Englewood Cliffs trucking firm, seized 1,087 pounds of cocaine found in a company truck, and confiscated the company’s assets, officials said.
Agents in New York, Los Angeles, and Tucson, Ariz., seized an additional 420 pounds of cocaine bringing the total value of the drug seizure to $13.3 million after the arrest of six individuals Wednesday in Queens, U.S. Customs Service Special Agent Martin Ficke said Friday. Three other people were arrested in Tucson, he said.
Jaime Quintero, president of Suffolk Overland Transport Inc. at 701 Palisades Ave., set up the deal for the truck to carry the drugs, Ficke said.
Ficke said about 12 trailers belonging to the company, which he said had been involved in “significant” drug trafficking since December 1989, were seized, along with other assets. The company’s 25 employees were effectively out of work, he said.
A man who answered Suffolk Overland Transport’s telephone in Englewood Cliffs on Friday declined to comment.
After the investigation began about two weeks ago in Tucson, agents followed a truck to Los Angeles, then to Newark, and finally to Queens, Ficke said.

ANONYMOUS CALL LEADS POLICE TO DRUG SUSPECTS

MICHAEL O. ALLEN | Thursday, April 18, 1991

The Record (New Jersey) | Four Star B | NEWS | Page B03

Three men were arrested on drug charges after a tipster told city police they were selling cocaine on West Street on Tuesday night.
Fernando Hernandez, 29, of Palisades Park; Uriel Capata, 22, of New York City, and German Rodriguez, 45, of Englewood were being held in the Bergen County Jail, each on $35,000 bail.
They were charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of an illegal drug within 1,000 feet of a school, said Englewood Police Capt. C. Kenneth Tinsley. Police also seized more than $1,000 and the 1985 Chevrolet car that Hernandez drove, he said.
An anonymous caller told police at about 7:15 p.m. that the three men were seen selling drugs on West Street, Tinsley said.
Detective Joseph Martin cut the car off at West Street’s intersection with Palisade Avenue. A dog from the Bergen County Police Department canine unit found about 38 grams of pure cocaine, worth about $40,000, in the car, Tinsley said. Most of the cocaine was hidden under the air-conditioning compartment in the car, he said.
