MEDIA UNFAIR, TEAMSTERS LOCAL SAYS

Members of Teamsters Local 560 marched to the state’s largest media outlets Saturday to protest what they called unfair news coverage of the union’s battle with government to elect its own leaders.
Starting with a rally in front of the local’s office in Union City, about 100 members came to The Record, then went to WWOR-TV in Secaucus. Newark police could not confirm whether the members went to The Star-Ledger in Newark, as they had announced they would.
When Local 560 filed a petition in U.S. District Court in Newark three weeks ago to end the six-year trusteeship of the union, “the news media gave minimal coverage,” said Bob Marra, secretary-treasurer of the local. “When the government filed their return brief . . . all the news media, including The Record, gave it front-page coverage.”
The government opposed the appointment of former President Michael Sciarra as business agent. In January, a federal judge banned him from positions of influence, ruling that the Genovese crime family was trying to resume control of the Teamsters through him. Sciarra is appealing the decision.

2 MEN ARRESTED IN STRING OF BURGLARIES

Town police say they have solved four recent burglaries, including three in which victims were asleep in their homes during the crime, with the arrest of a 21-year-old man and an accomplice who helped him in at least one of the break-ins.
Police arrested Joseph Baker of Hagen Place about 8 p.m. Tuesday as he walked near the Plaza Motor Inn, the scene of one of the burglaries about three weeks ago, Lt. Howard Lenz said.
Arrested with Baker and charged with conspiracy to commit burglary was Thomas Calicchio, 21, of 90th Street in North Bergen, Lenz said.
Calicchio was waiting outside a window for Baker in the most recent burglary, about 2 a.m. Tuesday, Lenz said. Baker broke into a Roosevelt Place apartment but left hurriedly when the 60-year-old woman who lives there awoke and saw him, Lenz said.
Baker was also tied to three other burglaries, police said.
An apartment on Hagen Place also was broken into sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. Tuesday. The thief took $10 and five cartons of cigarettes, police said.
“About three weeks ago, we had a similar incident where a house was broken into,” Lenz said. “People were asleep in the house, and a man’s wallet containing $250 was taken from a kitchen table.”
Around the same time, a burglar stole cigarettes and about $500 from vending machines in a storage area of the Plaza Motor Inn on Route 3, Lenz said.
Baker, charged with four counts of burglary and three counts of theft, was being held on $2,500 bail in the Hudson County Jail. Calicchio was released on his own recognizance.

A 28-year-old man wanted in Passaic County for sentencing on drug charges is being held without bail following his arrest Thursday in a motel, authorities said.
Pernell Brooks, 28, was flushing crack cocaine down a toilet when five detectives two from Secaucus and three from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department walked into his room at the Red Roof Inn about 10 a.m., said Sgt. Kathy Krzysko, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department.
Brooks, whose last known address is 68 President St., Passaic, was wanted on five warrants for failing to appear in Passaic County Superior Court for sentencing, Krzysko said.
Krzysko said the detectives recovered $10,000 worth of crack cocaine, some of it in jumbo vials, and about 500 empty vials.
Brooks faces charges in Secaucus and Passaic County for possession of cocaine, possession of the drug with intent to distribute, possession of paraphernalia, hindering his arrest by allegedly flushing the drug down the toilet, and maintaining a drug production facility.

WASHED-UP BODY MAY BE LOST SUSPECT

MICHAEL O. ALLEN | Wednesday, April 10, 1991

The Record (New Jersey) | Four Star B | NEWS | Page B04

A body found Tuesday on the muddy bank of the Hackensack River may be that of a suspect who jumped into the frigid water March 14 while being pursued from the scene of a burglary, police said. The man is believed to be John Quinones.
Police say detectives investigating the March 14 burglary of the Liz Claiborne warehouse in Secaucus identified Quinones, 23, of Bayonne as one of the two suspects who fled in a van from the scene. The men abandoned the van and jumped in the river to avoid being caught.
Police found Raymond Simone, 32, of Jersey City, at about 12:30 a.m. on the west bank of the river, three hours after the search began.
Simone, suffering from exposure, was treated at Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center. He was charged with two counts of burglary, one count of theft, and eluding police, and later was transferred to the Hudson County Jail.
Surveyors working in the area found the body along the riverbank about 100 feet south of the North Bergen Foundry at about 1 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
